Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago sit side by side on the Algarve coast, a few minutes from our office in Almancil, and between them they make up the heart of the Golden Triangle. Both are gated, beautifully kept and close to Faro Airport, so the question we hear most often from guests is simple: which one is right for us? Here is how they compare. Vale do Lobo: the beach resort Vale do Lobo is the older of the two, dating back to the 1960s, and it is built around its beach. The resort has more than 2 km of uninterrupted beachfront, and at its centre is the Praça, a square of shops, bars and restaurants right beside the sand. If you picture long days on the beach followed by dinner within walking distance, Vale do Lobo is hard to beat. Golf: two courses, the Royal and the Ocean, both running along the clifftops. The Royal's 16th, a par 3 played over the cliffs, is one of the most photographed holes in Portuguese golf. Tennis and fitness: a large tennis centre, plus a gym and spa. Getting around: villas range from townhouses near the Praça to large detached villas with sea views, and many guests barely use the car once they arrive. Vale do Lobo suits families who want the beach on their doorstep, groups who like a lively evening scene, and golfers who want two courses inside the resort. Quinta do Lago: space, nature and golf Quinta do Lago is larger, at around 2,000 acres, and feels greener and more spread out. It borders the Ria Formosa, the lagoon and nature reserve that runs along this part of the coast, and the resort's own lake is a focal point, with watersports and a lakeside beach at The Shack. Golf: three courses, North, South and Laranjal, giving 54 holes in total. Beach: the main beach, Praia da Quinta do Lago, is reached across a long wooden bridge over the Ria Formosa. It is one of the most memorable walks to a beach anywhere in the Algarve. Eating out and sport: more than a dozen restaurants across the resort, and The Campus, a multi-sports hub. Quinta do Lago suits guests who want privacy and space, keen golfers, and families who like nature walks, cycling and lake activities as much as the beach. Villas tend to be larger, and many have big gardens. Between the two resorts lies Dunas Douradas, a smaller and quieter residential area with its own stretch of beach and the Dunas Douradas Beach Club. It is a great choice if you want a calmer base while still being minutes from the restaurants and golf of both Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago. Still not sure? The honest answer is that you can't go wrong with either, and they are close enough to enjoy both during your stay. What matters most is the villa itself: how many bedrooms you need, whether you want to walk to the beach, a heated pool for spring or autumn, or a quiet garden.
