Quinta do Lago is the most westerly corner of the Algarve's Golden Triangle, set among umbrella pines on the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It is only about 15 minutes by car from Faro Airport, yet it feels a world away: quiet roads, golf courses, lakes and a beach you reach on foot over the lagoon. Here is our guide to the resort, from our team just up the road in Almancil. A little history The resort was founded in the early 1970s by the developer André Jordan, on a beach-lined estate of around 550 hectares of stone pine forest beside the Ria Formosa. Within a few years the lake had been created on the old salt flats and a bridge built to the beach. Quinta do Lago now marks more than 50 years, and it has kept the low-rise, green feel that drew its first visitors. The lake The lake is the heart of the resort and the name says it all: quinta do lago means "the estate of the lake". The water is used for supervised activities. The resort's watersports team offers sailing and windsurfing on the lake, and on the beach there is water skiing, banana boat rides and more in season. It is a gentle place for children to try something new. The Ria Formosa on your doorstep The Ria Formosa is a protected lagoon that stretches for close to 60 km along the coast from Faro towards Tavira, with barrier islands, salt marshes and channels. It is home to flamingos, storks and many other resident and migratory birds, and Quinta do Lago sits at its western end. The beach and footbridge: Praia da Quinta do Lago is reached by a wooden walkway of about 300 metres over the reed beds and tidal flats. Look out for shellfish harvesters at low tide, and sometimes flamingos near the salt pans. The São Lourenço trail: a nature trail close to the beach, through pinewoods, lagoons and marshes, with a bird hide over the São Lourenço lake. Mallards, coots and purple swamphens are among the birds you may see. Boardwalks west: boardwalks over the dunes link Quinta do Lago with Praia do Ancão, so you can walk along the coast towards Vale do Lobo. Guided trips: the resort lists biking, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, fishing and boat tours guided by a marine biologist in the Ria Formosa. For more on the beaches nearby, see our guide to the best beaches near Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and Dunas Douradas. Golf Quinta do Lago has three courses of its own: the South, the North and Laranjal. The South and North are the older layouts, gently rolling, walkable and lined with umbrella pines. Laranjal, opened in 2009, is more contemporary in style, with lakes adding to the drama. The resort has invested heavily in recent years in making the courses more water-efficient, and there is a golf academy and performance centre for lessons and club fitting. Our article on golf in the Golden Triangle covers these and the other courses close by. The Campus and other sport The Campus is the resort's sports and wellness hub. It has a high-performance gym, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor padel courts, an aquatic centre and a full-size football pitch, and it runs academies for children, including football and swimming. Day passes and memberships are available; check with The Campus for current options. Cycling and running routes lead out from the resort into the Ria Formosa, and there is mini golf for younger players. Dining and evenings Eating out is a big part of a stay here. You will find restaurants around the lake, beach clubs by the sea and dining in the resort's hotels, from relaxed lunches to special-occasion dinners. Menus and opening times change with the season, especially between summer and winter, so it is worth booking ahead in July and August. Ask us when you book your villa and we will point you to what is open during your stay. Is Quinta do Lago right for you? Villas here are usually set in large, private plots among the pines, and many are a short walk or cycle from the lake. If you are still deciding between resorts, read our comparison of Vale do Lobo or Quinta do Lago. Local tip from our team Quinta do Lago has a magic of its own. It's the place to forget about schedules, slow down and enjoy the moment. Walk, or if you're feeling energetic run, the boardwalks and trails that lead from Quinta do Lago towards Faro through the Ria Formosa. You'll find yourself stopping every few minutes for a heron, a flamingo or a flower you haven't seen before. Look up and you'll often see planes gliding in low on their way to Faro airport. Kids love it. No car, or no wish to hunt for parking? Uber works well here, and the delivery apps mean you never have to leave the villa. On those days when all you want is the pool, the sunshine and the sunset from the balcony, order in. Try an Italian-style pizza made with seasonal Algarve produce, or the region's famous piri-piri chicken, an absolute must. Trust us!
