The Golden Triangle has one of the highest concentrations of top golf courses in Europe. From a villa in Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo or Almancil, more than ten courses are within about 20 minutes' drive, many of them set among umbrella pines with views over the Ria Formosa or the Atlantic. Here is our guide to the courses closest to you. Quinta do Lago: North, South and Laranjal Quinta do Lago has three 18-hole courses, giving 54 holes inside the resort. The South course is the best known and has hosted the Portuguese Open; the North course winds through pine woods and lakes; and Laranjal, the newest, is built around former orange groves and lakes and is often praised for its condition. If golf is the main reason for your trip, a Quinta do Lago villa puts all three on your doorstep. San Lorenzo San Lorenzo, designed by Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, sits on the edge of Quinta do Lago alongside the Ria Formosa nature reserve. It is a par 72 of just over 6,200 yards, and several holes run beside the lagoon with wonderful views. The 6th, a dogleg played towards a lagoon from the tee, is the signature hole. It is regularly ranked among the best courses in Portugal, so book well ahead. Vale do Lobo: Royal and Ocean Vale do Lobo has two 18-hole courses running along its clifftops. The Royal is home to one of the most photographed holes in European golf, the par 3 16th, played across the cliffs with the beach far below. The Ocean course is a little more forgiving and makes a great holiday round, with sea views on several holes. Both are a short walk or buggy ride from many Vale do Lobo villas. Pinheiros Altos Pinheiros Altos, between Almancil and Quinta do Lago, has 27 holes across three loops of nine, set among pines and cork oaks with lakes in play. It is a good choice for groups who want variety over several days. See our villas in Pinheiros Altos. Vila Sol and Vilamoura Pestana Vila Sol: 27 holes just inland from Vilamoura, a long-established favourite with three loops of nine. Vilamoura: the Old Course, set among mature pines, is one of the Algarve's classics, joined by the Pinhal, Laguna and Millennium courses. The former Victoria course has been rebuilt by Ernie Els as The Els Club Vilamoura, now a private members' club, so it is not normally open to visitors. Vilamoura is around 15 to 20 minutes from Almancil, or on your doorstep if you stay in one of our Vilamoura villas. Tips for golfers Best months: March to May and September to November bring warm, settled weather without the summer heat. Winter is mild and popular too. See our Algarve weather guide. Book tee times early, especially in spring and autumn, when the best courses fill weeks ahead. Many visitors book their main rounds at the same time as their flights. Bring your handicap certificate: some courses ask to see it, and there may be a maximum handicap for the busier courses. Clubs: you can fly with your own or hire good-quality sets at most clubs. Early or late: in July and August, early tee times are cooler and often cheaper; twilight rates can be good value too. Planning a golf trip?
