Dunas Douradas: a quieter base between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago

3 November 2026

Dunas Douradas is the quiet one of the three resorts we know best. It sits among pine trees between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, close to a long sandy beach, and it gives you easy access to both neighbours without being in the middle of either. Here is our guide, from our team just up the road in Almancil. Where it is Dunas Douradas lies in the Vale do Garrão area of Almancil, in the municipality of Loulé. Vale do Lobo is immediately to the west and Quinta do Lago further along to the east. The name means "golden dunes", and you will see why when you reach the beach. Faro Airport is close by; our guide to getting from Faro Airport to the resorts has the details. The beach: Praia do Garrão The beach here is Praia do Garrão, which is split into two sections. Both flew the Blue Flag in 2026. Garrão Poente (west): also known as Praia das Dunas Douradas. It is reached from beside the Dunas Douradas Beach Club by a long walkway to the sand, with the Ocean golf course at Vale do Lobo bordering it to the west. Sunbeds and straw umbrellas are available to rent. Garrão Nascente (east): a wide stretch of sand backed by dunes and pine woods, reached by a walkway across the dunes, with a car park nearby. It marks the western edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Both sections are lifeguarded in the bathing season, usually from June to September. For a wider look at the coast, see our guide to the best beaches near Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and Dunas Douradas. Lagoons, dunes and birdlife A little over 200 metres inland from the western beach lies the Dunas Douradas lagoon, home to birds and other wildlife. A second lagoon, Lagoa do Garrão, sits at the eastern end of the Nascente beach. If you enjoy a morning walk with binoculars, this is a lovely, unhurried stretch of coast, and the wider Ria Formosa trails are close by. Our Quinta do Lago resort guide covers those. The Dunas Douradas Beach Club The best-known address here is the Dunas Douradas Beach Club, a resort of around 140 apartments and villas, a few minutes on foot from the sand. It lists pools, a spa, a restaurant and a kids' club. These are run by the Beach Club for its own guests, so if you are staying in a villa nearby, ask us what is open to you during your stay. Golf, tennis and dining nearby Part of the appeal of staying here is what lies a short drive away, in both directions: Golf: the Vale do Lobo courses are next door, and the Quinta do Lago courses are along the coast. Our article on golf in the Golden Triangle has the full picture. Tennis and padel: the Vale do Lobo Tennis Academy and The Campus at Quinta do Lago are both easy to reach for lessons or a game. Restaurants and evenings: the Praça at Vale do Lobo and the lake at Quinta do Lago are the obvious places for a livelier night out. Opening times change with the season, so check before you go, especially in winter. Is Dunas Douradas right for you? It suits you if you would like: a calmer holiday, with the beach close by and fewer crowds around you the choice of Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago without having to pick one a villa among the pines rather than in the middle of a busy resort If you want restaurants and bars on your doorstep, you may prefer to stay in Vale do Lobo itself. Our comparison, Vale do Lobo or Quinta do Lago?, will help you decide what matters most. Local tip from our team Dunas Douradas is one of the real highlights of this stretch of coast, and for good reason: the beach is close by, with some fantastic restaurants and beach bars within easy reach. Our favourite stretch of sand is Praia do Ancão, a short way along the coast towards Quinta do Lago, around 3 Móces and 2 Passos. With beach bars, restaurants and wooden walkways all close together, it has everything you need for a perfect Algarve beach day. Start at the 3 Móces beach bar: a great atmosphere, good music and a wonderfully relaxed vibe, the perfect place to spend a few hours by the sea. A few metres further along the wooden walkway is 2 Passos (Dois Passos), a team favourite and a must even if you only go once. It's a lovely spot for a meal, and don't miss the rooftop terrace, perfect for a few drinks and some nibbles as the sun goes down. Keep an eye on the sea at sunset: you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins swimming past, completely wild and free. It's a truly magical way to end the day.
