One of the best things about staying in the Golden Triangle is that you are never far from the sand. This stretch of coast, between Vale do Lobo in the west and the Ria Formosa lagoon in the east, is one long run of golden beaches backed by dunes, pine trees and low ochre cliffs. Here is our guide to the beaches closest to your villa, from our team just up the road in Almancil. Praia da Quinta do Lago Quinta do Lago's main beach is reached across a long wooden footbridge over the Ria Formosa lagoon, and the walk over the water is half the pleasure. On one side you have the calm, shallow lagoon, popular with paddleboarders and birdwatchers; on the other, open Atlantic beach with plenty of space even in summer. There are beach restaurants at the end of the bridge for lunch with your feet in the sand. Good for: a memorable beach day, nature lovers, families who like the calm lagoon side for little ones. Praia do Ancão Just west of Quinta do Lago, Praia do Ancão marks the start of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. It is around two kilometres of soft, pale sand, backed by dunes and pine woods and reached along wooden boardwalks that protect the dunes. It has a relaxed, natural feel, with beach clubs where you can hire a sunbed for the day. Good for: long walks, a quieter beach day, lunch at a beach club. Praia do Garrão and Dunas Douradas Between Ancão and Vale do Lobo lies Praia do Garrão, split into Garrão Nascente (east) and Garrão Poente (west). The western half is also known as the Dunas Douradas beach, the "golden dunes" that give the resort its name. Expect wide sand, high dunes and the first of the rust-red cliffs that run west towards Vale do Lobo. It is usually calmer than the busier resort beaches, and if you are staying in Dunas Douradas or at the Dunas Douradas Beach Club, it is right on your doorstep. Good for: space, a calmer feel, easy access from Dunas Douradas villas. Praia do Vale do Lobo Vale do Lobo's beach runs for more than two kilometres beneath the resort's red cliffs, with the Praça, its square of restaurants, bars and shops, right beside the sand. It is the liveliest of the Golden Triangle beaches, with watersports, beach restaurants and everything within walking distance of many Vale do Lobo villas. Good for: families with older children, groups, a beach day that rolls into dinner. Worth the short drive Praia da Falésia: about six kilometres of sand running from Vilamoura west to Olhos de Água, beneath dramatic red, orange and white cliffs. The Vilamoura end (Rocha Baixinha) is reached over a footbridge and boardwalks from a paid car park; further west, the clifftop car parks fill quickly in summer, so go early. Around 20 to 25 minutes from Almancil. If you are staying in Vilamoura, it is close by. Praia de Faro: the long sand spit beside Faro Airport, reached over a narrow bridge. Busy with locals at weekends, with plenty of simple seafood restaurants. Practical tips Lifeguards are on duty during the official bathing season, broadly from early summer to mid-September. Outside those months, swim only where it is safe and watch the flags. The water is the Atlantic: refreshing in June, at its warmest in August and September. See our Algarve weather guide for sea temperatures by month. In July and August, arrive before 10am for parking at the most popular beaches, and book beach restaurants for lunch. Bring cash or a card for sunbeds: most beach clubs rent loungers and umbrellas by the day. Choosing where to stay?
