The Algarve is one of the sunniest places in Europe, with around 3,000 hours of sunshine a year at Faro. But each season offers something different, from quiet spring golf to hot, lively summers and warm, golden autumns. Here is what to expect month by month, so you can choose the right time for your villa holiday. Rainy days are days with at least 1 mm of rain. Spring (March to May) Spring is one of our favourite times of year. The countryside is green, the orange blossom is out, and days are warm but rarely hot. It is ideal for golf, walking and cycling, and for Easter family holidays. The sea is still cool, so a villa with a heated pool makes a real difference. Summer (June to August) Summer brings hot, dry, reliably sunny weather, with almost no rain in July and August. The beaches and restaurants are at their liveliest. It is the most popular time for families, so the best villas book up early, often in January and February. A sea breeze usually keeps the coast comfortable, but choose a villa with air conditioning if you feel the heat. Autumn (September and October) September is often the best-kept secret of the Algarve year. It is still hot, the sea is at its warmest of the year, and once the school holidays end, the beaches and golf courses are quieter. October stays warm and is excellent for golf, with the first rain showers usually arriving later in the month. Winter (November to February) Winters are mild, with daytime highs of 16 to 20°C and plenty of bright, sunny days between the showers. It is a lovely time for golf, long lunches and walks along the beach or the Ria Formosa. Evenings are cool, so look for a villa with heating or a log fire, and a heated pool if you want to swim. So when should you go? Beach holidays with children: June to early September. Golf: March to May and September to November. Warm weather without the crowds: May, June and September. Winter sun: any time from November to March, with a heated pool. Whatever the season, the right villa makes the difference.
